Former Chief Medical Officer ASL Biella (until 2015)

Dr. Franco Piunti, born on 18 October 1950, graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Perugia, Italy. He specialised in Hygiene and Preventive Medicine at the same university and has participated successfully to the training course for leaders of health services organised by the Regional Authority of Piedmont, Italy. He received his Master's degree in Applied Ethics and Bioethics organised by University of Torino, Italy.

Currently he holds the position of Chief Medical Officer at the Local Health Authority (ASL) of Biella; he was Director of Integrated Prevention and Director of the Department of Preventive Medicine at the ASL of Biella.

Dr. Piunti, on behalf of the ALS of Biella, is among the founding members of the Steering Committee of the Elvo Valley Local Action Group, which has the purpose to efficiently use EU funds aimed at mountain areas. He hs been a member of the Steering Committee of the agency for energy efficiency of the Province of Biella (Agenbiella), and was awarded by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and by the Department of Public Administration in two different editions for projects related to prevention and promotion of healthy eating behaviour.

Dr. Piunti has been a member of the Bioethics Commission of the Board of Medical Doctors and Pharmacists of Biella; president of the Italian Association Textiles and Health (; member of the Executive Committee of the "Edo ed Elvo Tempia" foundation; member of the National Association of Doctors for the Environment (ISDE) in representation of the Board of Medical Doctors and Pharmacists of Biella; member of the Ethics Committee of the teaching hospital of Novara; founding member of the Cooperative Credit Bank of Biella (Banco di Biella).

As president of the National Association "Textile and health", Dr. Piunti was the Head of Research in PROJECT: B13/DOC/02 - Construction of a database of chemical substances in manufacturing processes and in the final products of the textile sector. He is the coordinator of the project of the Ministry of Health "Establishment of a National Observatory for the assessment of health risks from textile products"; he coordinated technical meetings on the risks from consumption of textile products with the several research centres specialised in textiles including experts of the National Institute of Health (ISS).
